Series and parallel connection of varistor and gas discharge

The varistor can be connected in series with the gas discharge tube, air gap, micro-discharge gap and other gas discharge devices. The normal operation of this series combination should meet two basic conditions: (1) the upper limit of the system voltage should be lower than the DC breakdown voltage of the gas discharge device G; (2) After G is ignited under the upper limit of the system voltage, the current in the varistor MY should be less than the arc maintenance current of G to ensure the arc extinguishing of G.

This series combination has a small capacitance, high working frequency; Small leakage current, good safety; And there is no varistor MY aging problem under the system voltage, so it has the advantage of high reliability, but there is also the problem of "switching voltage" caused by the corresponding slow gas discharge device.

The varistor can also be connected in parallel with the gas discharge tube to reduce the impact ignition voltage of the gas discharge tube.
